Originating in the 1950’s, first in Britain and then in the USA, Pop art was an art movement inspired by popular culture. Imagery from capitalist culture such as that found in adverts, on product packaging, in magazines and comics is used to create new forms of art or punctuate traditional art. The movement challenged the traditional idea of fine art by using mundane items and imagery in popular culture in satirical, ironic and unexpected ways. Pop art is seen as a reaction to the abstract expressionism of artists like Pollock and has similarities to dadaism in its use of existing images and found objects.
The British and American pop art movements differed significantly due to their different geographical locations in relation to the subject matter - american popular culture. The British pop artists were experiencing this from a distance both physically and culturally and their work had elements of humour, playfulness and irony. The American pop art movement was in the middle of this maelstrom of adverts and imagery that was US popular culture. Their work was therefore stronger, bolder and more eye catching because it needed to make itself seen clearly against this noisy background.
All the pop art images, backgrounds and wallpapers in this collection are completely free to download and use for your personal pleasure on your computing devices.
