The recording of historical events is thought to have begun during the time of the Ancient Mesopotamian civilisation around 3500 BC. This is when rudimentary writing and pictograms started developing and they eventually evolved into a fully developed written language, taking some 1000 years to do so. Only a select few could write or understand the language, usually religious priests and bureaucrats at the top echelon of society. These people had a direct influence on what was recorded as historical “fact” and therefore effectively controlled the history of their civilisation. This control of written language and, by association, history by high officials and religious groups continued well into medieval times, where latin was the prominent written language. It was known only by a small, select part of society - priests, bureaucracy and aristocracy. Kings would often make extravagant donations to churches in return for favourable mention in the priest’s writings, hoping that history would record their reign to be that of a good, popular king (as opposed to the potential truth.) Written language blossomed after the invention of the printing press in the 15th century. Common languages such as English, which were usually only spoken languages, suddenly became written languages and literacy expanded greatly throughout the populations of Europe. Historians now had a much larger and broader selection of source material from which to pick through.
