Anime images and wallpapers featuring classic characters and shows. Anime is used in the West to describe animation and cartoons produced in Japan. In japanese the word simply means animation and applies to all different types and styles from all over the world. In the west it means specifically Japanese animation that often follows a particularly distinctive, simple style featuring young, colourful characters often with strongly stylised, large eyes. Anime was first displayed commercially in 1917 and the now distinctive art style was first developed in the 1960’s by the artist Osamo Tezuka. The general anime style is concerned less with character animation and more the realism of the settings and presentation of the images using panning, zooming, angle shots and other cinematic techniques.
The anime film industry currently has over 430 studios, famous and popular ones being Studio Ghibli, Toei Animation and Gainax. It is hugely popular in Japan, accounting for the majority of DVD sales in the country. Popularity abroad has exploded in the last 20 years thanks to the success internationally of anime films such as Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke from Studio Ghibli. However the film that first brought anime to an international audience was Akira in 1988. The classic dystopian, cyberpunk, sci-fi motorbike animation set in a future Tokyo set a new benchmark for mature, animated movies.
